Inclusion Initiative

The North Carolina Technical Assistance Preschool Project (NC-TAPP) held an ‘Inclusion Think Tank,’ sponsored by the Office of Early Learning, NC Department of Public Instruction on February 21-22, 2012 in Greensboro to

  • identify successes, strategies, challenges, and needs related to increasing inclusive opportunities for preschoolers with IEPs and
  • begin developing guiding practices and support materials for use by communities across North Carolina who wish to increase inclusive opportunities for preschoolers with IEPs.

NC-TAPP invited participants from county-level ‘Inclusion Initiatives’ to attend the think tank.  Selected participants represented the various roles of cross-sector stakeholders in preschool programs for exceptional children, including administrators, teachers, and family.  Contact information for think tank participants can be found at this link – Participant List for Inclusion Think Tank.  Please also see our agenda for the two-day meeting.

Participants reflected on Inclusion Initiative activities which have taken place over the past few years and were facilitated by NC-TAPP staff.  Activities included 1) forming the inclusion group, 2) articulating the mission and vision of the inclusion initiative, 3) the self-assessment process, 4) looking at data, 5) sharing resources, and 6) logistics and facilitation.  These activities are described in more detail in this document - NC Preschool Inclusion Initiative Work Scope.

Participants discussed their experiences with Inclusion Initiative activities in terms of ‘what worked’ and what didn’t work.’ They also provided feedback on the resources associated with each activity.  These resources can be viewed at the links below.
